That’s normally how a paddle starts, a text from a fellow paddler – one to the other, then another – and here we go.
First it was February but the cool nights held us back – now, April 22 is the date
At the moment, the week of April 22 2024 is our paddle date for the Suwannee river, part for sure, and maybe more. We’ll likely meetup on Sat or Sun at the Cone Bridge boat ramp/landing, sort our gear – then proceed to the Outpost Sun 21 or Mon 22 am. There is a shuttle fee for getting back to the camp or getting a ride North.
Truth is for me, its getting pretty comfortable around the house, I got a lake in the back yard, a dog and a cat – so ‘getting out the door‘ remains the hardest part. Other parts to it include the primitive camping part – I got a big soft bed and a hot shower at home….
The resistance at the moment to committing to the whole Suwannee, which can be a weather toss-up in the month of February – it could be wonderfully warm, or then it could be Alligator breath weather…
So here’s the plan if you would like to join us + 3 (Carl, Gordy, and I).
The topside of the Suwannee takes 4 nights to make it back to the Outpost from the sill (or Fargo) – beautiful, even peaceful paddle – at that point you can restock from your vehicle or get out. That section is thee nights primitive camping, plus one at Woods Ferry Camp (screened shelter, hot water shower). While paddling we’ve learned to find a spot around 3 or so and make camp for the night, build a fire/ enjoy some river food/beverage/chat you know – enjoy the time at the river. It’s back and paddling before 830 in the mornings. It’s plenty up to you when you stop and go.
The section southwest from the Outpost (music park) to the mouth of the Suwannee at the Gulf, figure 6 days (3 primitive, 3 river camps). All the information/mileage/ and considerations along the way are on this Suwannee river Trip idea Agenda link, please read. For paddling both Topside and lower section to the town of Suwannee, you might want to give yourself a 2-week window.
Along the way, I like the option of padding about a mile up the Sante Fe (Below Branford) to Ellie Ray’s; a good land-food restaurant/bar, camp, get out – or just a stop – or not. If the night before is spent in the Branford park, there is land-food and frosty beverages there.
I’m just throwing this out there in case any fellow paddlers (kayaks) want to paddle along – either section and/or both if the impetus for more happens.
The topside is happening, my options for the lower section will remain ‘open.’
You can see from our past posts that we are a casual/friendly yet motley crew – while enjoying our paddles in a safe manner. You will be responsible for your own vessel, and all that goes with it.
Contact me here, via comment, or at bacshortly@yahoo – or just show up April 22 at the Outpost…..
